Greetings from Hokkaido, Japan and happy July 4th week!
At Westlake, we shut the office down twice a year, once for the week of July 4th and for a week between Christmas and New Years. As we have become more connected, the concept of life work balance has shifted into a sort of life work integration where we are tethered to our smart devices. We spend a few hours with our families and log back in after kids go to sleep and somehow this has become the norm.
These breaks allow our team to recharge, reset, and hit the ground running for six month sprints before taking a break to recharge with family. As a family business, family is important to us and we live and breathe those values. I encourage our employees to spend time with their families and do things that fill their cup up, for us that is hiking and eating our way through Hokkaido for the week.
Comment below, what are people’s thoughts on office shut downs / quiet times that allow people to unplug on vacation?
