Let's see if this is a controversial opinion... been thinking about this a lot lately and want to get the LinkedIn community's thoughts on this so here we go... if you know how to create value, you will never lack a safety net. You will be the safety net.
I had the unique experience of being brought up in a family with two family businesses, one on my mom’s side and one on my dad’s side. When my parents got married, the businesses were about the same size. Fast forward 41 years and the businesses have diverged, one has shrunk materially and barely exists and the other is the business that I run today.
Most people spend their lives focused on building financial security, but here is what I have learned through my lived experience:
Money is temporary.
Value creation is permanent.
Your ability to build, solve, and contribute will protect you far more than any bank account ever could.
A few thoughts on what I actually mean when I say we use the business to help transfer values to the next generation:
1. We pass down capability, not entitlement.
The goal is not to hand over wealth, but to hand over the mindset that produces it.
2. We teach ownership thinking.
The next generation learns to create opportunities for wealth generation and to tackle problems with a focus on long-term value creation.
3. We focus on resilience and adaptability.
Markets shift. Circumstances change. The people who know how to create value will always find their footing.
4. We show that business is the best classroom.
Every decision, setback, partnership, and win teaches discipline, judgment, and service to others.
5. We carry forward the responsibility of a multigenerational legacy.
The first generation built it but every generation that comes after must redefine the business and adapt it to the changing circumstances of the market and society.
When you inherit a family business, you inherit more than a company. You inherit a mandate: keep creating value and keep evolving.
This is what motivates me and gets me so excited about building out niche industrial investment theses and being the first generation of my family to raise outside capital. We love investing with like-minded individuals and families. Feel free to reach out about investment opportunities in our industrial outdoor storage (IOS) deals if any of what you just read resonates.
