My dog doesn't know what Industrial Outdoor Storage is

He doesn't know about the deal in escrow, the LP who went quiet, or the model I ran at 8pm.

He just knows it is time to get in the water.

I started surfing with my dog Albee a few years ago. The first thing I learned: you cannot be distracted in the ocean with a dog. He does not allow it. He wants to be next to me, on the board, in my way, completely unbothered by anything that happened yesterday or might happen tomorrow.

That turns out to be the whole point.

On the days I surf before the inbox opens (with or without Albee), something shifts. I am less reactive. I am clearer on what actually matters versus what just feels urgent. I used to think that was a coincidence. I don't anymore.

Presence is not a state you arrive at. It is a condition you have to create. For me, that means getting in the ocean before the day asks anything of me.

My dog just thinks it means it is time to surf.

He is probably right.

What do you do to clear your head before the day starts?

Blast tax: enjoy this video my husband took of us last summer. The ocean is truly my happy place.
